South Australian apprentice Polly Brewster is hoping her current venture to Tasmania may evolve into something long‑term, and she’s wasted no time making an impression. Over the weekend she secured a strong book of rides for Launceston on Friday night and Hobart on Sunday.

A natural lightweight at 51kg with a 2kg claim, Brewster is well‑placed to pick up opportunities across the state.

Remarkably, she had never ridden a racehorse until relocating to Naracoorte during the COVID period, where her aunty and uncle were based. Local trainer Sue Jaensch introduced her to thoroughbreds, sparking Brewster’s decision to pursue a racing career. She later transferred to Jessica Tzaferis’ Murray Bridge stable to continue her development.

Now two years into her apprenticeship, Brewster has already ridden 33 winners and will celebrate her 26th birthday in Tasmania this Saturday.

She began race riding in February 2024, landing her first victory just a month later when she claimed the Streaky Bay Cup aboard the Richard & Chantelle Jolly‑trained Shakespeare. In February this year she added another country feature, guiding Everlasting Kiss to victory in the Ceduna Cup.

Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Last year, she received the Sydney “Paper Mac” and Nancy McDonald Award, recognising a first- or second-year apprentice who demonstrates exceptional commitment to the racing industry, particularly at the grassroots level.

With her work ethic, talent and riding weight, Brewster looks set to attract plenty of opportunities during her Tasmanian stint — and perhaps well beyond it.
