Armidale Stud has confirmed the passing of long-time resident stallion Tough Speed (USA), who died peacefully this week at the age of 29 following a gradual decline associated with old age.
His passing marks the end of an important chapter in Tasmanian breeding — closing the book on a stallion who, against the odds, became one of the state’s most influential and enduring sires.
From imported miler to Tasmanian mainstay
Purchased in 2004 by the late Denis and Robyn Whishaw, Tough Speed arrived in Tasmania quietly, without commercial hype but with a solid European race record that hinted at untapped potential.
Before retirement to stud, he was a high-class miler in the United Kingdom, competing successfully at Group level.
His racing record read:
- 19 starts: 3 wins, 2 seconds, 4 thirds
- Earnings: £112,153
- Winner of the G3 Park Stakes
- Placed in the G2 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot
It was a career that reflected genuine class and toughness — traits that would later become hallmarks of his stud legacy.
A stallion who exceeded expectations
Standing in Tasmania, Tough Speed never had access to the large commercial books afforded to many mainland sires. Despite this, he consistently outperformed expectations and established himself as a proven source of durability and staying power.
Over his stud career, he sired:
- 127 individual winners
- 443 race wins
- 20 stakes performers
- Nearly $10 million in progeny earnings
His best performers included:
- Take The Sit
- Black ’N’ Tough
- Lyell
- Tiesto
- Tough Chic
- and the standout stayer Banca Mo, one of his most notable success stories
Rising influence as a broodmare sire
In recent seasons, Tough Speed’s impact has become even more pronounced through his daughters, who have continued to deliver quality winners and stakes performers.
He is already the broodmare sire of:
- 49 winners from 77 runners
Key performers include:
- Deroche — G3 Vamos Stakes winner, 10 wins and more than $420,000 in earnings
- Alpine Flyer
- Gee Gees Darl
Another standout result came via Vino Novello, out of Tough Speed mare Royal Miswaki, who captured the Tasmanian St Leger, further reinforcing the strength of his female line.
Performances like these have strengthened a growing reputation among breeders: mares by Tough Speed consistently add toughness, resilience, and competitiveness to their progeny.
A lasting legacy at Armidale Stud
For Armidale Stud, Tough Speed was more than a sire — he was a foundational presence. Through years of change in the Tasmanian breeding landscape, he remained a constant, shaping pedigrees and influencing the state’s thoroughbred identity.
As the industry reflects on his passing, his legacy is clear. Tough Speed may not have arrived with fanfare, but he leaves as one of the most significant influences on the modern Tasbred.
His name will continue to be felt every time a tough, competitive, and honest racehorse emerges from his daughters — carrying forward the attributes that defined his life and career.
