TasRacing says the total number of races conducted during the 2026/27 season will remain unchanged, despite a reduction in the number of race meetings across the state.

Earlier this month, the governing body confirmed it would schedule 61 thoroughbred meetings for the season, excluding any meetings that may be conducted on King Island. That represents three fewer meetings than were held in 2025/26, while the harness racing calendar has also been trimmed.

However, TasRacing CEO Andrew Jenkins said the changes were the result of extensive consultation with industry participants and stakeholders, with the focus firmly on improving efficiency rather than reducing opportunities.

“Our preliminary plans were adjusted following a genuine consultation process with participants and a broad range of racing stakeholders,” Jenkins told The Straight.

“While there will be fewer race meetings across both equine codes, the total number of races and the overall stakes pool will remain unchanged.”

Jenkins said the revised schedule is designed to improve travel efficiencies while maximising wagering returns and the commercial performance of the industry.

“We’re not taking those savings out of stakes or participants’ and owners’ pockets,” he said. “This is about delivering a more efficient racing program while maintaining returns to the industry.”
