Racing at Devonport came to an unexpected halt on Wednesday, with the meeting postponed after just two races following the discovery of rocks on the Tapeta synthetic racing surface.
The issue was identified prior to Race 3, prompting stewards to inspect the track before deciding it was unsafe for racing to continue.
Tasracing subsequently announced the Spreyton track would be closed to all activity, including trackwork, while remediation work and a detailed assessment of the surface were undertaken.
At this stage, Tasracing has not publicly explained how the rocks came to be on the racing surface or the extent of the problem.
The incident will be of particular concern to trainers based at Spreyton, with the closure also affecting the venue’s regular training operations.
Tasracing said further advice regarding upcoming race meetings and the reopening of the track would be provided following the assessment.
The priority will now be ensuring the synthetic surface is safe for horses and riders before racing and training are allowed to resume.
