Friday night’s meeting in Launceston will mark an important milestone for apprentice jockey Akimasa Phanthura, who is set to make his Tasmanian riding debut aboard Prince of Khatun.
Prince of Khatun has not raced since a solid third placing behind Swift Force in the 3YO Classic on Launceston Cup Day and will provide Phanthura with his first race ride in the state.
Born in Japan, Phanthura gained valuable race-riding experience in France, where he rode three winners and recorded seven placings from 46 rides.
The 24-year-old joined the Tasmanian Apprentice Jockey Program as a mature-age apprentice and is being mentored by former leading jockey Stephen Maskiell.
Phanthura is apprenticed to leading Latrobe trainer Adam Trinder and will be looking to make a strong first impression when he takes his place in the saddle on Friday night.
