Irish-born jockey Erica Byrne Burke continued her remarkable rise in Tasmanian racing on Friday night, riding four of the eight winners at Mowbray to underline why she is one of the state’s leading riders.

The reigning Tasmanian Jockeys’ Premiership winner was in outstanding form, guiding Shines Discreetly ($5) to victory in the opening race before adding wins aboard Genuine Lady ($9), Prince Of Khatun and Ozonica to complete an impressive four-timer.

The haul took Byrne Burke’s season tally to 14 winners, lifting her to the top of the premiership standings, three clear of Anthony Darmanin, who also enjoyed a successful evening with a winning double.

With another premiership firmly in her sights, the popular Irishwoman is well on her way to making it back-to-back titles.

From a Small Irish Town to Tasmanian Racing Stardom

Byrne Burke’s journey to the top of Tasmanian racing is an extraordinary story of determination, hard work and an unexpected opportunity that changed her life.

Hailing from Ratoath, a small town in County Meath, Ireland, Byrne Burke grew up without any family connections to the racing industry. However, from an early age, she had ambitions of becoming a jockey.

Her introduction to horses came through showjumping at Broadmeadows Equestrian Centre in Ashbourne, where she developed the riding skills that would eventually help shape her racing career.

At just 17, she enrolled at the prestigious Race Academy & Centre of Education (RACE) in Kildare, Ireland’s leading training facility for aspiring jockeys and stable staff.

Determined to establish herself in racing, Byrne Burke gained valuable experience with trainer Dermot McLoughlin, initially through work experience before becoming a regular weekend employee at his stables.

She later furthered her education in the industry working with renowned Irish trainer Dermot Weld, a two-time Melbourne Cup winner.

A Working Holiday That Changed Everything

Around six years ago, Byrne Burke arrived in Sydney on a working holiday visa, intending to spend just 12 months in Australia before returning home.

However, fate had other plans.

A chance connection with a fellow Irishman working at Tasmania’s Armidale Stud eventually brought her to the Apple Isle, a move that would transform her racing career.

Since relocating to Tasmania in May 2021, Byrne Burke has established herself as one of the state’s most successful riders, accumulating an impressive 261 winners.

Her achievements are even more remarkable considering she was forced to spend three months on the sidelines because of visa complications.

Despite that setback, her determination and natural ability have seen her rise through the ranks to claim the Tasmanian Jockeys’ Premiership.

Friday night’s four-win performance was another reminder of the talent that has made Byrne Burke such a formidable force in the saddle.

From a young girl with dreams of becoming a jockey in a small Irish town to a premiership-winning rider on the other side of the world, Erica Byrne Burke’s story is one of perseverance, opportunity and outstanding achievement.

And judging by Friday night’s performance, there could be plenty more success to come for the talented Irishwoman.
