Five=year-old mare Mastretta looks to have won her way into the $150,000 Listed Newmarket to be run on November 20 at Mowbray after her all the way victory on Friday night.

Trainer Monica Ryan elected to take the blinkers off the mare, which allowed her to not overrace in the running, and when challenged in the straight by Geegees Missile under strong riding from jockey Kelvin Sanderson, Mastretta fought back to win by just on ¾ of a length from the fast-finishing Garcon D’espoir, who grabbed second from Geegees Missile.

Mastretta was purchased by Monica Ryan out of the 2023 Magic Million Tasmania sale for $36,000 when offered by Brooklyn Park Stud; she was previously pinhooked in 2022 from a Magic Millions online sale

Ryan dismissed starting Mastretta in the Goodwood Handicap in Hobart on Melbourne Cup Day as she believes the mare doesn’t handle the Elwick circuit.

She will now freshen up the daughter of Grunt and punt on her getting a start into the Newmarket.

Owned by a large group of friends and long term clients including former Jockey and Tasmanian Racing Hall of Fame inductee Ron Riley.

Riley is a regular member of popular weekly podcast Crawf and Crew where he is a form analyst.

Mastreeta has now won 6 races and 8 placings from 22 starts.
