Thoroughbred racing returns to Elwick on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday, November 3, for the first time since August 19, with the $50,000 Goodwood Handicap (1100m) headlining the program.
The Hobart track appears to have benefited from its extended spring break, with the Tasmanian Racing Club opening the course proper for gallops on Thursday morning ahead of next week’s meeting.
The Goodwood Handicap has attracted 12 nominations, including several talented sprinters resuming from spells.
Among them are Durazzo, Flying Concello, Blameitontheboogie and Geegees Gemstone, while race-fit gallopers Glory Mission and Prince Of Khatun bring strong recent form into the contest.
Leading jockey Troy Baker has elected to partner the Jessie Bazan-trained Flying Concello, who was among the horses to gallop on the Elwick course proper on Thursday morning.
The daughter of Trapeze Artist has been a revelation since joining Bazan’s stable, winning four of her five starts in Tasmania.
Flying Concello has been specifically prepared for a first-up assault on the Goodwood Handicap and will head into the feature following two successful trials.
Her impressive trial performances suggest she is ready to make her presence felt against some of Tasmania’s leading sprinters.
Flying Concello was purchased for just $18,000 by prominent greyhound racing identity Mick Stringer through the 2024 Inglis Digital Online Sale.
That investment has already proved an astute one, with the mare emerging as one of Tasmania’s most exciting sprinting prospects.
