As Tasmania’s thoroughbred industry continues to await certainty over a new racing funding deed, attention is slowly turning towards the 2027 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
The industry’s push for a long-term funding agreement remains the biggest cloud hanging over racing, with many participants arguing that stability is needed to secure the future of the sport. Added to that are wider economic pressures and a cautious global marketplace.
Yet despite those challenges, there are reasons for optimism.
The 2026 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale delivered a marked improvement on the previous year, with five yearlings selling for six figures. In contrast, no yearling reached the $100,000 mark in 2025. The average price jumped from $23,506 to $34,343, an increase of almost 46 per cent, while the clearance rate improved from 75 per cent to 76.15 per cent.
Perhaps even more encouraging was the breadth of the buying bench. Buyers from the Philippines and Malaysia joined mainland trainers and syndicators in competing for Tasmanian-bred stock, underlining the growing reach of the local product.
Magic Millions’ Tim Brown expects between 100 and 105 yearlings to be catalogued when the sale catalogue is released in November, a figure that suggests breeders continue to support the sale despite ongoing uncertainty.
The strongest endorsement of the Tasmanian sale, however, remains the results achieved by its graduates.
In recent years horses such as The Map, Durazzo, Swiftforce, Mazzini and Sanniya have all helped demonstrate that quality racehorses can emerge from the Tasmanian marketplace and compete at a high level beyond the state’s borders.
Their success has provided buyers with confidence and given vendors a valuable selling point heading into future sales.
While uncertainty surrounding a new funding deed remains a significant concern for the industry, the growing interest from interstate and international buyers, improving sale statistics and the ongoing success of sale graduates suggest there is still plenty of confidence in Tasmanian thoroughbred breeding.
The coming months will reveal whether that confidence can overcome the challenges facing the wider industry, but the foundations for another competitive Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale appear firmly in place.
